I thought I’d go to bed early last night but it’s now 5:30am and I’ve been awake since 3am. I have made use of the past couple of hours and have booked my accommodation in Rio for the 27th and 28th in an area called Ipanema. We’ll talk more about Rio later in the month.
Dubai.
I only spent 1 night in Dubai but will be spending a couple more on the way back to Aus. Emirates airlines hooked me up with free accommodation in their airport hotel which was ok. It was free so I didn’t expect much.
As I was only there for around 16 hours I decided to take advantage of a cheapo tour some company was offering in the hotel lobby for $30 US. The tour took us to all of the famous sites such as the famous 7 star hotel, the Burj Al Arab, the tallest building in the world The Burj Khalifa and a quick tour of the palm islands.
Although the tour didn’t exactly take us in into any of the buildings I was still blown away just being near these structures.
You can’t help but feel surrounded by wealth in Dubai. Every car you see is an expensive luxury vehicle, the skyline is littered with futuristic looking buildings which would impress in any city only if they weren’t over shadowed by the Burj Khalifa. What a site. This building is just ridiculous. It can seen from pretty much any location and just feels like it’s watching you everywhere you go. Although I was not able to enter the building I did get see an amazing fountain show which is displayed at the base of the building every 30 minutes. I recorded some footage so I’ll try and post it!
I’ll cover Buenos Aires in my next post!
Just boarded. I love being cattled through business and first class to get to economy. Cheers.
Only two nights away from my flight and feeling a little nervous.
Usually a couple of days before travelling I get nasty thoughts of being kidnapped and held for ransom or being help up at gun point or something like that whilst travelling - thanks Hollywood. A more real concern at the moment is ensuring that I’ve packed enough and if I’m entirely prepared for this trip.
This is a common anxiety with most travellers before a big trip but this time for me it’s a little exaggerated by the fact that I’ve decided to pack minimalist.
After speaking to a colleague about my 4 week long trip around South America he suggested travelling with carry on luggage only. This idea sounded challenging and fun so I did a bit of googling on “minimalist travelling” and became more and more enthusiastic about the idea. I went to the local travel shop and looked around for a back pack that would do the job. It started dawning on me that this was not going to be easy, especially for 4 weeks. I went home and thought more about it and did a bit more reading. The next day I bought a 38L backpack which was on sale for $150.
I spent the money.
The challenge is on.
Oh god.
I’m packing the following:
My plan of attack is to hardly use the clothes I’ve packed and just buy cheapo tees, undies and socks when available during my travels and only use the clothes in my backpack if necessary.

The cheapo stuff I buy or things I no longer need I’ve decided to hand over to any homeless people I come across.
I’m going to regret this aren’t I?
I was recently speaking to a friend about my trip and sharing previous travel experiences. We both agreed that sleeping in foreign beds is one of the most uncomfortable things to do and how absolutely lovely it is to come home after traveling and jumping into your own bed for the first time.
We joked that it is almost worth spending thousands of dollars purely to travel and then come home, pass out and make happy comfortable noises in bed after entering into bed after so long.
I really don’t know where I’m going with this but all I know is that I am NOT looking forward to foreign creepy beds… Oh, and showers.
Hi all I’m back. I’ve decided it’s time to start blogging again as I am traveling again in February and would like to document the shit out of my trip.
My trip is to South America (again) but this time I plan on seeing more than just Peru and Chile. I arrive in Buenos Aires and travel through the south of Chile to Peru and across to Rio. On the way to and from South America I’ll be spending time in Dubai. I know it’s an odd detour but it was a cheaper “Emirates Birthday” deal.
Watch this space!
